EXCURSION INFORMATION


1. GENERAL INFORMATION

The excursions are planned to the participants of 14th World Sanskrit conference on Saturday, 5th September, 2009. For details, please refer to the following excursion information.

Those who want to participate in one of the excursions need to complete an online registration and a payment of the registration fee at the 14th World Sanskrit Conference website. The payment for the excursion should be made at the registration on 31 August 2009.

The application form should be submitted by 27 August 2009.

2. EXCURSION INFORMATION


● TOUR 1 : BUDDHIST TEMPLE ARTS

TOJI
This temple, a UNESCO World Heritages Site, was built to pray for peace and tranquility of the capital when Heian-kyo, the original name of Kyoto, was established in 794. The temple’s 5-story pagoda is the highest in Japan (56/4 meters).The temple belongs to the Shingon (Mantra) sect of Buddhism (Vajrayana) and is home to numerous works of arts, many of which are National Treasures.

NISHI HONGWANJI TEMPLE
Hongwan-ji Temple was founded in 1591 as the head temple of the Jodo-shinshu (浄土真宗 or "True Pure Land") sect of Buddhism.
The Nishi Hongwan-ji Temple was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1994.
Its imposing architecture is characteristic of the popular Jodo-shin shu. The Shoin room and Karamon Chinese Gate are both designated as National Treasures. There are also a famous garden and Japan’s oldest Noh Theatre stage.

● TOUR 2 : HIGASHIYAMA WALKING

KIYOMIZU TEMPLE
A UESCO World Heritage Site. The main hall, famous for its spacious outdoor, cliff-like balcony, supported on an intricate, several story high wooden structure of pillars, is a designated National Treasure. Kiyomizudera (Pure Water Temple) stands in the wooded hills of eastern Kyoto and offers visitors a nice view over the city from its famous wooden terrace. Below the terrace, you can taste the spring water, which gives the temple its name and which is said to have healing power.

WALKING IN THE HIGASHIYAMA DISTRICT
The eastern part of Kyoto's city center is called Higashiyama, located at the west end of the Higashiyama Mountain Range. As early as the middle of the 14th century, many shrines, temples and aristocrats' villas were built in this area, where a variety of architecture and gardens, artistic and cultural masterpieces such as paintings and crafts were created.

SANJU SANGENDO
The temple is famous for 1001 wooden statues of the Thousand-armed Avalokiteshwara.
The temple was founded in 1164 and its present structures date from 1266.

●TOUR 4 : BOAT AND WALKING TOUR


HOZUGAWA KUDARI
Arashiyama is a mountainous region to the west of Kyoto, known for its scenic beauty and especially crowded during the cherry blossom and autumn leaves seasons.
The Hozugawa Kudari is a boat journey down River Hozu, winding through the mountains from Kameoka to Arashiyama.

WALKING IN THE ARASHIYAMA DISTRICT
Arashiyama is a pleasant, touristy district at the outskirts of Kyoto. Its landmark is the wooden (now partially concrete) Togetsukyo Bridge with forested Mount Arashiyama as backdrop.
There are many things to see and do in the Arashiyama area. Tenryuji, a leading Zen temple, as well as shops, cafes and restaurants, is found in the district's busy center around Togetsukyo Bridge and Keifuku Arashiyama Station.
North of the central area, there are bamboo groves and a residential district with several small temples, scattered along the base of the wooded mountains.

●TOUR 5 : HIKING TOUR

Kurama is a rural town in the northern mountains of Kyoto City, less than one hour from the city center.
Kurama's main attraction, Kurama-dera, is a Buddhist temple located in the wooded slopes above the town. From its main gate in the town's center, the main buildings can be reached in a 30-45 minute climb up the mountain. There is a hiking path from the backside of Kurama-dera to Kibune shrine, winding down the mountain. Kibune is famous for its pure water. The road from the Kibune shrine to Kubuneguchi-Station runs along a river and is cool even in the summer.
